Find out how it's both a pickup and an SUV
What does it take to convert a rugged, capable, durable and refined Chevrolet full-size SUV into a pickup with a full-size cargo box? Less than a minute. That's how long it takes to transform Chevrolet Avalanche using the General Motors-exclusive Midgate™. Another kind of transformation occurs with the standard FlexFuel 310 hp 5.3L and 366 hp 6.0L VVT Vortec V8 engines. Both enhance fuel efficiency with Active Fuel Management ® and, new for 2009, a six-speed automatic transmission with two fuel-saving overdrive gears. Just as reassuring is the fact that Avalanche earned the highest possible U.S. government frontal and side-impact safety ratings.** The SUV of pickups and the pickup of SUVs – the 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche.
The name says it all: Convert-A-Cab ®. The centrepiece is literally the gateway between SUV comfort and pickup box utility – the Midgate. When upright, it forms the rear wall of the SUV cabin. Folded down, it extends the open-air cargo bed to more than 2.4 metres (8 ft.) in length, accommodating 4'x 8' sheets of building material.
Avalanche's Vortec V8 engines aren't defined by their power and dependability alone. Active Fuel Management makes them commendably fuel efficient. How? When power demands are low, they switch from eight cylinder to four cylinder operation. It just goes to show that these engines adapt, just like Avalanche's cabin.
The available rear-view camera system enables you to see objects behind you when the vehicle is in reverse. The image is displayed either on the available DVD navigation system monitor – or for 2009, as a stand-alone option with a display on the interior rear-view mirror.
Avalanche helps you stay connected with Bluetooth ® cell phone connectivity, an in-vehicle system that allows Bluetooth-enabled cell phones to utilize vehicle's audio system, microphone, voice recognition and steering wheel controls, for hands-free cell phone calling. In addition, a new available XM Nav Traffic † feature uses real-time traffic data to help you select an alternate route. Nav radio is required. Technology that keeps you a step ahead – in Avalanche.
