Techno Tools! Problem-Solving Apps for Every Day
Here’s Chevrolet’s take on tech that’s ready to impress.
OnStar® RemoteLink™ App
Free
Download
This ingenious app moves the celebrated OnStar® service into the palm of your hands. Remote start-up (if so equipped), one-click door unlock and a visualization of key vehicle information, including how much gas is in the tank, all combine to make this a must-add to the coveted first screen real estate on any smartphone. Along with an additional online component and an easy link to call in for the much-lauded OnStar® support, this slickly designed app will change how you interact with your car. Beyond the comfort of being there when trouble hits, it’s the day-to-day problem-solvers – such as fluid level and tire pressure check, never accidentally locking the keys in the car again or starting the car to warm up on a freezing day (if so equipped) – that make it the most innovative automotive accessory every new car owner should have.
Compatible with iPhone®, iPod Touch®, iPad®1 and Android™2 devices.
“...OnStar® RemoteLink™ is a new service that is tied to a free app that you would download to your Android or iPhone to start and it lets you control your vehicle in a number of ways.” Marc Saltzman, technology Expert, CFRB 1010 Tech Talk
“...downloading RemoteLink™ would appear to be a no-brainer.” Chad Sapieha, Technology, Globe and Mail
OpenTable
Free
Download
On the road and craving something other than fast food? The OpenTable® app makes free, instant and confirmed reservations at over 11,000 restaurants worldwide.
Compatible with most mobile devices, including iPhone®, iPad®1, Android™2 and Blackberry®3.
GasBuddy.com
Free
Download
Apps for finding things remain the most popular of any in the App store, and while there are competitors, GasBuddy.com is one of the most useful gas station detectors for Canadians. It will also let you know where the cheapest option is, which these days is more important than ever. Great for road trips but also for finding those scarce stations in the city.
Road-Trip Bingo
99 cents in the iTunes App Store
Download
Every parent knows that their phone obsession has already passed onto the next generation, as today’s toddlers often clamour to play with their parents’ phones. This simple app displays a Bingo card of road signs, sights and scenes that kids can search for out the window while in the back seat. Like the card-based original, five in any direction wins the game. Simply shake to get a new board. It’s a perfect time waster for them and a worthy way to save parental sanity by staving off endless “Are we there yet?” queries.
Crackle
Free
Download
This new Sony app brings the Hulu/Netflix experience to mobile devices using the company’s extensive back catalogue of movies and TV shows. It’s free but ad-supported, so you will see commercials. Better on the iPad, the only knock is much of the content is definitely older material. That said, it works well, has some pretty great stuff and always beats running out to the video store.
Available on iPhone®, iPad® and iPod touch®1.
