The Convert-A-Cab® system transforms Avalanche from a spacious SUV to the equivalent of a full-size pickup. The key is the GM-exclusive Midgate. When upright, it forms the rear wall of the SUV cabin. Folded down, it extends the open-air cargo bed to more than eight feet in length, accommodating 4'x 8' sheets of building material.

Avalanche's 320 hp Vortec 5.3L (310 hp in 4WD) and 6.0L V8 (366 hp) engines can switch to a fuel-saving mode instantaneously. That's thanks to Active Fuel Management® technology that shuts down four of eight cylinders when less power is required. And talk about flexibility, the Vortec 5.3L V8 is offered in a FlexFuel version that can run on gasoline or E85 - up to 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Flex-Fuel 5.3L V8 is standard on 4x4, and available on 2wd.

A series of features in Avalanche make handling cargo that much easier. Like the grab handles that enhance your access to the bed, while also serving as tie-down anchors. That's convenient because you can load lots of stuff into Avalanche's cargo box, with a payload of up to 634 kg (1397 lb.) on 4x4 models. And once your cargo is loaded, it's dry and secure under the 3-piece rigid cargo cover.

The Avalanche's comprehensive safety package now includes standard head curtain side-impact air bags with a rollover sensor. Further enhancing your safety and convenience are the available heated windshield washer system and available DVD navigation system that includes rear-view camera system that displays objects behind you on the navigation system monitor.
