Learn about the biggest name in full-size SUVs.
Everything we've learned since building the first sport ute 73 years ago goes into making today's Chevrolet Suburban the most capable in its history. That begins with power. The 310 hp Vortec 5.3L V8 that's standard on 1500 models features Active Fuel Management ®for significant fuel efficiency gains. The 352 hp Vortec 6.0L V8 is standard on 2500 models and features variable valve timing (VVT) to optimize both power and fuel efficiency. And with prodigious power comes class-leading cargo capacity: 3891 L (137.4 cu. ft.)** and trailering capacities that top out at a massive 4355 kg (9600 lb.). An equally high standard is applied to the safety package and the level of refinement inside the cabin. Put history on your side: with the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban.
It used to be an either/or proposition. If you wanted robust power, you had to sacrifice fuel efficiency. That was before Active Fuel Management, which is included in the Vortec 5.3L V8 that's standard on 1500. This technology shuts down four of eight cylinders when power demands are low, significantly reducing fuel consumption.
The new six-speed automatic transmission keeps you in the sweet spot in the rpm range – and it features two overdrive gears to enhance fuel efficiency. You can use the tap-up/tap-down driver shift control to manually select a gear, if desired. It's the transmission that stays in sync with your demands.
Suburban continues to set the pace with its innovative safety technology. For 2009, 1500 models offer an available side blind zone alert that uses radar technology to detect a vehicle entering a blind spot. And all Suburbans are equipped with the StabiliTrak™ electronic stability control system that helps counter the causes of understeer and oversteer. Suburban also earned the highest possible U.S. government frontal and side-impact crash test ratings – five stars. †
The available Z71 Off-Road Package includes an array of rugged features, including off-road jounce bumpers, high-pressure gas charged monotube shock absorbers, a skid plate package and front recovery hooks. The styling is also rugged, with features like 18" aluminum wheels, pronounced wheel flares, Z71-specific fog lights and front fascia, plus a bright chrome grille insert and chrome tubular assist steps.
