GM Safety systems are developed through testing and engineering
programs that lead the auto industry.
Even
though the government requires manufacturers to conduct safety
tests with a dummy representing the average adult male, GM
developed and uses a family of dummies in vehicle
tests, because our customers are families: men, women and
children. The government specifies safety testing in the front
seating positions with a mid-sized male dummy. GM, however,
tests with a variety of dummies in a variety of front and
rear seating positions. GM crash tests over 600 vehicles a
year -over six times the number required to comply with government
regulations.
Air bag evaluations provide an example of GMs extensive
testing. GM air bags are the most comprehensively engineered
and developed in the industry. The government specifies air
bag testing using a variation of two test conditions. GM, however,
has conducted 48 evaluations and uses this research in developing
future air bag systems.
